Where to stay

Where to stay for the AIG Women’s Open at Sandwich

Our suggestion: begin in Sandwich for proximity to Royal St George’s, then compare Deal for a coastal stay or Canterbury for a city break.

Every alternative needs a complete journey to the championship entrance, not just a train to east Kent.

Choose the right Kent base for your days

The AIG Women's Open visits Royal St George's from 28 July–1 August 2027, with the practice day on Wednesday and championship play from Thursday to Sunday. Those dates let you compare exact nights now. Our suggestion: use Sandwich as your first search if you intend to attend several days, because keeping the local approach manageable becomes more valuable with repetition. For a single golf day within a wider Kent holiday, a farther coastal or city base may make more sense.

Start with your preferred arrival at the course and work back through each part of the journey. Accommodation near a station may be useful, but you will still need the final transfer or walk from Sandwich to the spectator gate. Check that route when tournament information is available. Do not assume a train arrival and a tee time are interchangeable. On departure, leave room for the walk out, waiting and the connection home, especially if you are travelling with children after a long day outside.

Sandwich: keep the championship close

Sandwich is our suggestion for a stay centred on the golf. Royal St George's is the named host, and the town is the natural place to begin searching for accommodation nearby. Investigate the property's precise location: a rural address described as Sandwich may need a different approach from a room in the town. Ask the host which road or pedestrian route leads to the announced public entrance and whether any tournament restrictions affect normal arrival.

A small central property can be appealing if you want to eat and return to your room without another vehicle journey. Check stairs, luggage access, parking terms and breakfast arrangements before committing. Historical charm is pleasant; an awkward flight of stairs after hours on the links is less helpful if someone in your group struggles with mobility. For a longer stay, compare self-catering space against a conventional room. Our suggestion: a kitchen and a table can contribute more to a family tournament week than a decorative view that you rarely have time to admire.

Deal: a coastal stay with a rail option

Deal is worth comparing for visitors who want the coast as well as the championship. Southeastern serves Deal and Sandwich, giving you a rail connection to investigate for the first part of the golf journey. Check the actual departures for your date and the way from Sandwich station to tournament access. A room close to Deal station can simplify mornings; a property described broadly as Deal may leave a separate walk or taxi before you even board.

Our suggestion: Deal suits a couple or family who want an enjoyable base on non-golf days without treating the championship as the only activity. Decide whether your return evening will be flexible or whether young children need an early meal. If driving, use the official parking directions once announced rather than following the normal club postcode to the door. Ask about parking at the accommodation as well: being able to park overnight and being permitted to use a bay all day are different conditions in some bookings.

Canterbury: a city break with a longer chain

Canterbury is our suggestion for travellers combining one or two golf days with a city stay. It can also suit a party in which only some members attend the tournament. The rail journey needs particular attention because Canterbury has more than one station and different routes may involve changes. Use Southeastern's planner from the station you will actually reach, travelling to Sandwich, and add the championship's onward connection. Do the same exercise for the evening return before selecting a room.

Look for accommodation with a straightforward route to your chosen departure station and nearby meal options. If you arrive by car but intend to use rail for golf, check where the vehicle stays during the day. A Canterbury address does not automatically make the Kent journey easy: a lovely room far from the station can add two local transfers to each attendance day. For several consecutive rounds, calculate that repetition honestly. The best city-break base and the simplest championship base need not be the same property.

Ramsgate and Margate: add a seaside holiday

Ramsgate and Margate offer two more coastal searches for a trip in which golf is one part of the holiday. Southeastern's network includes both towns and Sandwich. Confirm the exact train, change if required, and the connection from Sandwich to the event rather than assuming every coastal service follows the same route. From your accommodation, include the time needed to reach the station; a beach-facing address may be a different proposition from a station-facing one.

Our suggestion: choose Ramsgate or Margate because your group wants to stay there, then make sure the golf day works. Do not select a farther room solely because its headline price looks lower. Add the daily fares and any local taxis, particularly if four people travel together. Families should ask about room separation and meal preparation, while friends sharing should confirm whether advertised beds are permanent beds. If you plan to drive to the tournament, compare the official parking approach with your actual location and keep the return evening free enough to absorb a slow departure.

Folkestone: useful when the wider trip points south

Folkestone can suit visitors whose wider travel or holiday plans already bring them to that part of Kent. Our suggestion: compare it for a stay combining the coast with a golf day, while checking the full transfer burden before booking for the entire championship. Use Southeastern's journey planner from the appropriate Folkestone station to Sandwich, and then add the event's final approach. Connections, station choice and departure times can change the usefulness of the journey.

If travelling by road, calculate the route to the designated championship parking rather than the nearest side of the golf course. Arrange a return collection point with any driver and recognise that access controls can move it away from the clubhouse. In the accommodation search, consider whether luggage storage, early breakfast and parking are included. Folkestone may work well for one group and poorly for another; the relevant difference is often how many days they attend and whether the people staying behind have their own enjoyable plans.

Book the room and the conditions together

Search the actual late-July and early-August nights, with the right ages for children and the true number of guests. Prices shown without those details are not a useful comparison. Our suggestion: reserve terms that give you enough time to finish transport decisions. Read the final cancellation date, prepayment requirements and any minimum stay, and keep a copy. Avoid holding a room on the assumption that ticket cancellation rules will automatically apply to accommodation too.

The night before your first golf day deserves consideration, particularly if travelling a long distance. After the final round, staying locally can allow a calmer departure than trying to combine the closing holes with a distant train or flight. For a one-day visit, compare Wednesday's practice-day experience with championship days in the event guide before choosing nights. Saving on accommodation is helpful only if the resulting itinerary still gives you the golf day you wanted. Never pay an unprotected private rental deposit merely because somebody claims all conventional rooms have gone.

Family comfort, accessibility and evenings

For a family, ask whether the property has somewhere to dry clothing and whether breakfast can be prepared or served before you leave. Plan a shorter first day if children are new to spectating. A nearby meal after returning can be more welcome than an ambitious cross-Kent evening outing. Choose the base with the whole party, including anyone skipping golf, and identify how those people will spend the day without the shared vehicle.

For accessible accommodation, obtain specifics about thresholds, bathroom arrangements and lifts, then join those details to the station and tournament access plan. Do not assume a short geographical distance means an easy walk across a links approach. Contact the organiser for suitable spectator arrangements before committing to a rigid itinerary. Read the AIG Women's Open hub, Royal St George's venue guide and our guides alongside your room shortlist. The best booking supports a comfortable day from breakfast to the final return.
