A course with two Opens in its history

The club’s own history dates its foundation to 1892 and describes an initial nine-hole course followed by the opening of eighteen holes in 1899. It hosted The Open in 1909, won by J H Taylor, and again in 1920, won by George Duncan. Those two championships place Royal Cinque Ports in the history of golf’s oldest major even though it is not the venue for the 2027 AIG Women’s Open.

Royal Cinque Ports’ history also explains why some planned Opens were not held here. War prevented the proposed 1915 championship; flooding led to the transfer of later allocated championships to Royal St George’s. For a visitor, this is a reminder that the list of courses associated with The Open includes a wider story than the current announced hosts. Use official histories for that story rather than treating every future venue rumour as a travel opportunity.

You do not need to memorise a historical timeline to appreciate the place. Read enough before arriving to recognise why the links matter, then spend the day looking at the actual golf. The relationship between a shot’s landing area and the next approach is often easier to understand in person than on a broadcast. Let that observation carry the visit instead of searching only for the exact viewpoint from an old photograph.

The confirmed 2027 championship

The R&A has selected Royal Cinque Ports for the Women’s Amateur Championship, and its current championship page confirms 21–26 June 2027. The earlier venue announcement records previous editions here in 1902 and 1988. If you found the announcement before the dates were supplied, the current competition page is the more useful reference for booking your nights.

The June event gives the area a different golf trip from the professional AIG Women’s Open at Royal St George’s later in the summer. Pick the event that suits your available dates and interests. Travelling for both means two separate arrangements, unless you are planning a much longer holiday. Check your leave and room dates against the championship title every time you make a reservation.

Public admission details deserve their own check. The official local tourism listing states that admission fees apply but does not publish a tariff. The checked organiser information did not establish a full ticket procedure, gate timetable or spectator facilities plan. Contact The R&A before a journey that depends on access; a championship’s amateur status is not proof of unrestricted or free entry.

Understanding the viewing experience

Links golf is best watched with attention to the ground as well as the ball in the air. Notice where a player chooses to land an approach, what happens after the first bounce and how the following shot changes. A position that looked safe from far away may leave a difficult angle. Staying in one permitted viewing area for several groups can show those differences more clearly than chasing every shot.

If you follow a match, establish its score before deciding which moments are decisive. A single hole can reverse the mood quickly, and the players’ strategy may depend on how many holes remain. Leave space for other followers to move. The temptation to hurry forward after a shot should not lead you across another group’s preparation or through an area closed to spectators.

Look for the official spectator map when it is released and use it to plan a route that matches your stamina. Viewing from beyond a rope line can still involve uneven surfaces and long standing periods. Plan a rest and a meal before you become tired. A first visit is more comfortable when you see a little less golf well rather than attempting an exhausting circuit.

Getting to Deal and the final approach

Southeastern provides information for Deal station, and White Cliffs Country identifies Deal among the area’s rail-connected towns. Build a rail plan from your actual starting point and verify any connection. Include the trip between the station and your accommodation, then consider how you will reach the course. A route that works at midday might not serve an early opening group or a late return.

For driving, use the club’s address to understand the geography, then replace the final approach with the event’s directions when available. Championship parking and temporary access restrictions need event-specific instructions. No particular car park, shuttle timetable or parking price was confirmed for the Women’s Amateur in the material checked. Avoid parking speculatively on neighbouring streets because a map suggests that they are convenient.

If you arrange a lift or taxi, ask where it can lawfully collect you and how you should communicate a later finish. Write the accommodation address down in a form you can show the driver. A small group should decide whether everyone must leave together or whether someone may return independently. That decision affects both the budget and how far each person can comfortably walk.

Places to stay and useful room questions

Deal is the most direct area to investigate for a visit centred on this course. Judge an individual property on the route you will use, access to meals and its arrival arrangements. Ask about luggage if your train reaches town before check-in. For several nights, an easy breakfast and a place to dry weather clothing can matter more than an extra decorative feature in a photograph.

Walmer expands the coastal search, while Sandwich offers another nearby-town option. Neither label guarantees a particular transfer time to Royal Cinque Ports. Compare the whole journey at the hours you expect to travel, including the way home after dinner. Canterbury may suit visitors who want a wider city break, provided they accept the daily connection to Deal.

Our accommodation advice is to compare total costs, not just the first nightly price displayed. Include parking charges, meals, transport and any extra bed costs. Read the exact cancellation deadline and the amount payable in advance. If your championship admission is still unresolved, choose a booking whose terms fit that uncertainty. Check live availability through the accommodation links rather than relying on a claim that rooms are running out.

Ordinary visitor golf and public access

The club’s normal visitor information welcomes visiting golfers Monday to Thursday. Those arrangements concern playing golf and remain subject to the club’s booking rules. They do not establish public sightseeing rights, permission to walk on fairways or access during a championship. Contact the club for a playing visit and the event organiser for tournament spectating.

For golfers adding a round to a spectator holiday, clarify tee availability, required playing documentation, dress expectations and cancellation terms directly. Equipment hire and storage should also be agreed before arriving if needed. Do not build a tightly timed round immediately before your booked journey home: golf, changing and collecting luggage can take longer than the optimistic version of an itinerary.

Non-playing companions should plan their own activity rather than assuming they can wander the course while a round is under way. White Cliffs Country has local maps and suggestions for Deal and the surrounding district. Agree where to meet afterwards and keep contact details accessible. A golf holiday works better when everyone has a day they actually want, rather than an improvised wait around someone else’s tee time.

Accessibility, evenings and preparing to leave

Ask specific access questions when planning a tournament day: the entrance surface, route length, toilets, seating opportunities and arrangements for a necessary companion. Event facilities may be temporary, and ordinary clubhouse access does not settle the condition of a spectator route. Give the organiser enough detail to advise usefully, particularly if uneven terrain or long standing periods are difficult.

The same principle applies to accommodation. A statement that a property is accessible should lead to a conversation about the features you need. Confirm steps, bathroom layout, door access and the route from any parking space. A well-matched room and a shorter viewing session can make the trip more enjoyable than attempting the longest available day.

For the evening, the tourist board’s food-and-drink information covers Deal, Dover and Sandwich. Choose somewhere that fits your return from the course and check the establishment’s own current opening arrangements. Build in a margin before a reservation. Before leaving home, use the golf packing guide, review spectator etiquette and complete the printable checklist. The result should be a clear travel plan with enough freedom to enjoy the day.

Give the departure morning its own small allowance for packing and returning keys. After a wet course day, shoes and outer layers may need separate bags. Ask where luggage can wait if your train is later than checkout, and keep your travel documents out of any bag left in storage.
