For most short trips, our preference is an uncomplicated flight and a base linked to the event transport; a ferry becomes more attractive within a longer Irish holiday.

Start from the town where you want to sleep

An airport or ferry port is only the beginning of the Irish portion of the journey. Decide whether you want to stay around Adare, in Limerick, or farther into Clare. Then work backwards to the arrival that serves it best. A low airfare and an awkward overnight transfer can cost more in both money and effort than a slightly dearer flight arriving at a practical time.

Use the Ryder Cup hub to align the holiday with your confirmed ticket dates. The official event week and the match days are different spans of time, so check the product you have bought rather than searching accommodation for a generic Ryder Cup weekend. Allow an arrival margin before your first session, particularly if the journey contains a connection sold on a separate booking.

For a party departing from different countries, meeting in Ireland can be easier than forcing everyone through one hub airport. Agree a rendezvous at the accommodation or a clearly named station. Share the entrance address, access instructions and the booking lead's contact details. If travellers arrive several hours apart, make sure the first person can check in without waiting for the last flight.

Shannon, Dublin and Cork: compare complete options

Shannon is a useful gateway to the event region; Dublin and Cork can suit different city stays and connecting routes. Check each airport's official route information and the operating airline's booking calendar for September 2027. Present-day services are not a promise of next year's frequency. Read arrival and departure times carefully, including the local date if your route involves an overnight connection.

A direct flight can simplify the luggage and delay risk, but it still needs a surface connection to the room. Compare a pre-booked transfer with the current public-transport options before deciding to hire a car. You may only need a vehicle for the touring portion after the golf. The Shannon guide and Dublin and Cork arrivals guide help organise that decision.

For the return, avoid an itinerary that relies on leaving the final match before you know how the contest will develop. A departure the next morning allows more room, although it may add a hotel night. Compare the full holiday price rather than treating that extra night as an automatic disadvantage. The last evening can be enjoyable when it is free of a rushed airport journey.

French ferries: established routes to investigate

Irish Ferries currently advertises the Cherbourg–Dublin route. Brittany Ferries' current route information lists Roscoff–Cork and Cherbourg–Rosslare. These are established route options to examine for a longer trip, not a published promise of a particular sailing during Ryder Cup week. Use the operators' own booking calendars for September 2027, port check-in requirements and the fare conditions.

Compare the arrival port with the rest of the holiday. Dublin puts you in the east; Cork suits a southern approach; Rosslare creates a different cross-country drive. Do not choose purely on the sea-crossing price. Add the road journey to the departure port in France, a cabin if wanted, meals, fuel, tolls where relevant and the onward driving after arrival.

A ferry can be attractive for a family bringing its own car, or friends turning the trip into a longer tour. Confirm the vehicle dimensions and passenger details accurately. A roof box, bicycle rack or larger vehicle can affect the booking. Check what access you have to belongings during the crossing and keep overnight essentials available in a separate bag rather than buried beneath the entire holiday's luggage.

Foot passengers and the port connection

If you are travelling without a car, check that the sailing accepts foot passengers and read the terminal transfer information before payment. A port described by a city name is not necessarily beside that city's main railway station. Look at the actual terminal and the onward route with luggage. Where a connection has to be booked independently, leave enough room for the arrival process and a delay.

Irish Ferries currently provides a France–Ireland SailRail information page. Examine the exact conditions and available destinations if it suits your route. A combined product may organise a different sequence from independently bought rail and ferry tickets. Keep the terms with the booking and ask the operator how assistance, luggage or bicycle requirements affect the journey you intend to make.

For your onward rail plan, use Iarnród Éireann's official planner and identify the station where the event connection departs. Limerick Colbert and Limerick Junction are separate locations. Read those names carefully when linking the ferry, intercity railway and championship transport. It is better to add a convenient arrival night than to force several fragile connections into a single ambitious travel day.

Documents and travelling with your own car

Ireland's Immigration Service Delivery says EU, EEA and Swiss citizens must present a passport or valid national identity card on arrival. Citizenship determines the applicable rule; simply travelling from an EU country does not make everyone in the party an EU citizen. Check each person's documents through the official immigration guidance and follow the carrier's identification requirements as well.

Ireland is outside the Schengen area. An itinerary including another country or a connection through Great Britain requires the entry and transit guidance appropriate to that route. Do not assume that one person's permission covers the group. Check children's documents, passport names and the names on transport bookings well before the departure day.

If you bring a car, Ireland uses left-hand traffic. The NDLS confirms that a valid EU or EEA driving licence can be used in Ireland. Check your insurance and vehicle assistance cover for the trip, including any conditions attached to ferry travel. Review the Ireland driving page for the official sources rather than learning about road rules while approaching your first junction.

Money, mobile data and the team you support

The Republic of Ireland uses the euro, which simplifies cash planning for travellers from the euro area. It still pays to check card and ATM charges with your provider. Visitors arriving from countries with a different currency should compare the exchange information before withdrawing money. Keep shared accommodation costs in one agreed currency so friends are not settling the same bill using different assumptions.

For an EU or EEA mobile plan, ask your provider how its roaming allowance and fair-use rules apply in Ireland. ComReg's roaming guidance explains the broad framework, but your own package determines the useful data allowance. Ferry and aircraft connections can use different networks from ordinary land-based roaming. Read the welcome message and settings rather than assuming the cheapest arrangement continues at sea.

Team Europe is a sporting team; your travel-document requirements depend on your nationality and itinerary. The same distinction helps with the atmosphere: supporters can enjoy a shared side without turning conversation into arguments about passports. Bring comfortable clothing suitable for an outdoor day, keep flags considerate of other spectators' views, and follow the final event policy on what can be carried inside.

Book a base that makes the Irish days easy

Our suggested booking order is admission, accommodation, the principal international journey and the linked event transport, with each decision checked against the flexibility of the others. Some travellers will need to reserve an important flight or cabin earlier, but that makes cancellation conditions more significant. Keep the plan legible enough that another person can understand it without reading a month of messages.

Use the Adare, Limerick and Shannon stay searches here to compare the actual addresses. A convenient room can save repeated local journeys and leave the evenings free for dinner. If you want a longer coastal holiday, read the western Ireland itinerary and move bases after the golf rather than driving back and forth simply to preserve one reservation.

Pack copies of the essential confirmations offline and agree what to do if travellers are separated. A physical meeting place, a spare key and the accommodation phone number solve more real problems than an overfull schedule. Leave the journey home with enough room to finish the holiday calmly, whatever happens to the match score.
