A car still needs an authorised Ryder Cup access plan because spectators cannot park on site.
Decide whether the car earns its place
A car is useful when the holiday includes countryside accommodation, several travellers sharing a route or touring before and after the Ryder Cup. It is less obviously useful for a city stay where the vehicle remains parked while you use organised event transport. Compare hire, fuel, parking and tolls with the journeys you would otherwise buy.
Look at your party’s plans rather than just the person who enjoys driving. Non-golfers may need transport while spectators are at the course, and a single shared car cannot be in two places at once. A central base can sometimes solve that problem better than a larger vehicle. If your group separates, arrange the alternatives before collecting the keys.
Our advice is to make the first drive modest after an overnight flight. A nearby overnight stop or a planned transfer can be worthwhile if the alternative is a long, tiring arrival behind the wheel.
UK licence holders: bring the current licence
The National Driver Licence Service says a visitor with a current, valid UK or Northern Ireland licence may drive during the visit and must carry the licence. GOV.UK’s driving guidance states that a UK licence holder does not need an international driving permit for visiting Ireland. Check both sources before travelling if your circumstances are unusual or your licence is changing.
Hiring a car adds a separate contract. A licence that permits driving does not automatically meet every supplier’s minimum age, experience, identification or payment-card condition. Read the actual rental terms for the named driver and vehicle category. Ask which documents the collection desk will require, including any supporting licence information.
Do not leave the physical licence packed in luggage that someone else is taking to another hotel. Keep it with the driver alongside the hire agreement and the provider’s contact details.

US and other overseas visitors
The Road Safety Authority’s foreign-licence guidance distinguishes visitors from residents and sets out the rules for non-EU/EEA licences. Its guidance for a visitor from a non-recognised state includes a current national licence and an international driving permit from the home country, for a temporary visit of no more than twelve months. US visitors should check that official guidance and obtain the required documents before departure.
An international permit accompanies the national licence; it does not replace it. Check the supplier’s acceptance of the documents and any additional conditions for the driver or vehicle. Obtain advice directly from the licensing authority if the licence is provisional, restricted, expired or otherwise outside the ordinary visitor case.
Leave time to resolve documentation before booking a non-refundable vehicle. A friend’s experience at a different counter is less useful than the current authority guidance and the conditions of the rental you intend to sign.
Left-side driving and distances
The RSA’s tourist road-safety advice confirms that traffic drives on the left and that Republic of Ireland speed limits use kilometres per hour. Read its current rules before arrival, particularly if you are used to miles or driving on the right. Follow posted limits and signs rather than a generic speed saved in a navigation app.
Before moving, set the mirrors, learn the lights and wipers and work out the gear selector or clutch. Let a passenger manage navigation where possible. If driving alone, programme the route while parked and stop safely before changing it. Keep the first journey simple enough to concentrate on road position and junctions.
Do not treat a speed limit as a target on an unfamiliar narrow road. Leave room for other users and use suitable stopping places if you need a break. An event trip is more enjoyable when the driving is calm and the arrival time includes sensible breathing room.
Choose a hire car you can use confidently
Reserve the transmission you want rather than assuming an automatic will be available on arrival. Compare luggage capacity as well as seats, especially for a group travelling with several cases. A crowded boot can become a daily inconvenience if you are moving accommodation around Ireland.
Read the deposit, excess, insurance, fuel and additional-driver conditions. Check which card must be presented and whether the cardholder must be the named driver. Ask about any planned travel into Northern Ireland or return to a different location. Keep the agreement and emergency contact accessible, and record existing damage at collection using clear photographs.
Make sure every person who may drive is authorised under the rental. A tired driver cannot simply hand over to an unlisted friend because the return from golf took longer than expected. Choose the group’s driving arrangement at the booking stage, with rest and the evening plan in mind.
Tolls: agree who pays before using the road
Transport Infrastructure Ireland provides official toll information, while eFlow’s tourist and rental guidance explains the barrier-free M50 system. For a driver responsible for payment, the M50 deadline is 8pm on the following day. A hire company may handle it differently under its own agreement, so ask before paying and avoid paying twice.
Get a clear answer about what the supplier covers, any administration charge and what you must do yourself. Keep payment references with the hire documents. Enter the vehicle registration carefully where you are responsible for a toll payment, and use the official payment route rather than an unsolicited link in a message.
Do not assume every journey from an airport uses the same tolled section. Review your actual route and the relevant official information. No 2027 toll rate is quoted here: use the current published charge for the vehicle and road when you travel.
Parking at the room and access to the championship
Ask the accommodation whether parking is included, reservable and suitable for the vehicle. Check any height restriction, access code or late-return procedure. A listing that mentions parking may refer to a public facility rather than a guaranteed space at the building. Keep the answer with the room booking if it affects the choice.
The organiser states that there is no on-site spectator parking at the Ryder Cup. A driver should use the confirmed paid park-and-ride or another authorised connection, following the instructions for the relevant day. Do not improvise parking in Adare or assume a taxi can use the ordinary resort entrance.
For a shared vehicle, agree the return meeting point and who keeps the keys. If one person wants to leave early, establish how that works without stranding the rest. Read the match-day transport guide before choosing a property solely by its distance to the course.
Make the evening safe and straightforward
Settle the designated driver before ordering drinks, or book a suitable return that removes the need to drive. Do not rely on finding an immediate taxi after a long pub evening, particularly for a rural stay. A meal within walking distance of the room can be a useful choice when everyone wants a relaxed night.
Keep each driving day proportionate to the rest of the holiday. Hours beside the ropes, an early departure and a late dinner can all add fatigue. Take a proper break when tired instead of trying to complete a sightseeing detour because it was written into the original plan. Give someone at the accommodation a realistic arrival window if a delay changes it.
For the final airport journey, allow time for refuelling, the vehicle return and the transfer to the terminal where needed. Check the supplier’s drop-off procedure rather than assuming it matches collection.
Book a base around the route you will use
Choose the room for the complete visit: event connection, evening meals, parking and any touring days. A rural house may suit a group who want to cook and travel together; a city stay may make separate interests easier. Read the property’s access and parking details before committing to a payment schedule.
Compare Adare, Limerick and Shannon using the searches below. Keep the final night close enough to the airport journey to avoid a rushed departure after the tournament. If a hire car is mainly for touring, consider collecting it only when that part of the trip begins.
The Ryder Cup hub, stay guide, Shannon arrival advice and Dublin and Cork connections help align the route with the accommodation. Buy the driving plan that fits your holiday, rather than assuming every visitor needs a car.

Our suggestion: start with Adare for proximity or Limerick for a city base, then match the room to your confirmed tournament transport. The Ryder Cup competition runs from 17–19 September 2027, within the official event week of 13–19 September.

Getting to Adare Manor on Ryder Cup match days
Choose event transport before relying on the distance from a room to Adare. The organiser outlines a temporary-station rail connection, a Limerick Colbert event bus and paid park-and-ride, with no on-site spectator parking.
