Liverpool works when you also want a city break and can make the Merseyrail journey fit your course day.

Choose the Southport stay that matches your day

Royal Birkdale's address is on Waterloo Road, Southport. For accommodation, that creates several useful searches rather than a single town-centre answer: Southport itself, Birkdale and Hillside each place your room differently relative to restaurants, stations and the course. Our preference for repeated course days is a local base whose final approach you can manage comfortably. Liverpool belongs in the comparison when city time forms an important part of the holiday.

Read our Royal Birkdale venue guide and confirm the occasion before booking. National Rail's 2026 Open guidance identified Hillside as the nearest station for that championship. That is useful previous-event context, but entrance arrangements for another event must come from its organiser. Our Open hub covers the current championship trip and venue; a stay near Birkdale should be tied to a real visit, not a presumed future Open.

Southport centre: a town-based holiday

Southport centre is our first comparison for visitors who want meals and evening plans around the accommodation rather than beside the course. Find out which station is useful for the address and plan the connection towards Hillside if that is the advised approach for your event. The name Southport on a listing does not tell you whether the property is close to the station, the seafront or a more distant neighbourhood.

Choose an accommodation style that supports the rhythm of your visit. A room with breakfast may be convenient if service begins before you leave; self-catering may suit a family with different waking times. Ask about both rather than assuming the usual breakfast hours fit a golf start. For a group splitting between spectators and non-golfers, town-centre accommodation can simplify the reunion at dinner. Check the course return separately, since a pleasant central address still requires a journey at the end of play.

Birkdale: compare the village and the station

Birkdale is worth searching if you would like a neighbourhood stay with the railway available. Be precise about the station: Birkdale and Hillside are separate stops, and proximity to one does not automatically establish the best course approach. Merseyrail's station information and network map help you compare the rail leg. If walking from the room, use the organiser's actual pedestrian entrance rather than a generic route to a course boundary.

Our suggestion is to weigh the evening walk and morning departure together. A property close to food and a useful station may beat a larger address requiring a taxi every time the party separates. Ask how parking works if you bring a car but intend to leave it at the accommodation on the golf day. For apartments, establish the key collection procedure and whether there is a lift where needed. A straightforward arrival matters after a long journey, especially if the host is not present when you reach the building.

Hillside: investigate the closest approach

Hillside deserves particular attention for course-focused visitors because of its relationship with Royal Birkdale's previous major-event rail approach. National Rail's 2026 Open page names it as the nearest station, and Merseyrail publishes the station's own facilities. Use that information to investigate a room, then check whether the entrance for your visit is in the same place. A past championship map should not be treated as permanent access permission.

A local property may allow you to avoid a train entirely, but measure the complete walking route, including crossings and any event diversions. For someone spending the day on their feet, the last walk home can feel longer than it did on the booking map. Ask about food within a comfortable distance too; being close to the golf is less useful if every evening needs another arranged transfer. Our preference is a base that remains convenient when one person leaves early and the others stay to watch more play.

Liverpool: for companions and a city evening

Liverpool suits a party dividing its time between golf and a city break. Merseyrail's Northern line information lets you plan towards Hillside or the station the organiser recommends, with the initial journey from your accommodation included. Choose the departure station from the property address rather than assuming the city's mainline arrival station is the one you will use every morning. Check the return timetable before reserving dinner in the city.

This can be an attractive arrangement for one golf day, particularly when companions want their own museums, shopping or other city plans. For several days, consider the repeated door-to-door travel as part of the price. A less expensive Liverpool room may still be a sensible choice, but the saving should be compared with fares, early starts and the possibility of a tired party wanting to return separately. Agree an independent meeting plan so a late finish at the course does not hold everyone else's evening hostage.

Plan the station leg and the final walk

Search outward and return journeys through Merseyrail for the exact day you are attending. Add time to reach the station and to walk from the arrival platform to the designated gate. Check service notices again when you travel, since engineering work can change the useful route. Save a comfortable return and an alternative; the final train should not be the only option written in the plan.

If the visit is a championship, look for the organiser's transport page and follow its current parking, shuttle and pedestrian instructions. Merseytravel published increased services for the 2026 Open, but those extra trains were arrangements for that event. Do not extend them to a later visit without confirmation. Drivers need to identify authorised parking and permitted pickup points, not simply programme the club address into a navigation app. A property owner's informal local shortcut is no substitute for the tournament's traffic restrictions.

Reserve a suitable room without buying uncertainty

Once the visit is confirmed, begin comparing suitable rooms, especially if you need adjacent bedrooms or a particular accessible layout. Booking earlier can offer more choice; it does not prove that every remaining room is about to disappear. Keep payment and cancellation deadlines alongside your admission details, and check whether the price is for the full party. Minimum-night conditions can make a seemingly cheap golf weekend more expensive than the first search result suggests.

For self-catering, inspect the final total after cleaning, parking and extra-guest charges. Ask whether the advertised sleeping places include sofa beds and whether the kitchen is adequate for breakfast. For a hotel or guesthouse, compare breakfast hours with your planned departure and ask about luggage storage on the last day. Shared bookings work best when everyone knows the deposit terms before one person pays. Decide how you would handle someone withdrawing and whether the property permits a change of guest name.

Families and accessibility: make the route comfortable

A family stay should make leaving early possible without spoiling the trip for the remaining spectators. Check the course's re-entry rules before planning a mid-afternoon rest, and give each returning adult the accommodation access details. Choose proper beds and a meal arrangement that fits children as well as adults. If the room is far from food, a kitchen can be useful; if cooking would become another chore, a closer restaurant may be worth prioritising.

For an accessible stay, request the features you require rather than relying on a single accessibility filter. Consider the property entrance, lifts, room space and bathroom, then combine those answers with Merseyrail's station information and the event's own access guidance. The walking distance inside the golf site may be substantial even when the station is nearby. Visitors with limited stamina should allow for queues, standing and a return at a time they can choose, rather than committing everyone to the last group.

Eat nearby and keep the departure manageable

Our suggestion after a full golf day is to have dinner near the room. Southport centre and Birkdale can make that an easy local evening if you choose the address accordingly; Hillside visitors should establish nearby options before assuming a post-round meal will look after itself. Liverpool guests can enjoy a city evening once the train journey is complete. Use official tourism listings for ideas, then confirm opening and food service directly with the business.

Leave the final morning simple: pack before departing for the course, store bags only where agreed and know how long collection takes. If you are returning home after play, leave slack for the walk out and station queues. Our first-time spectator guide and packing advice can help you avoid carrying more than you need. A successful Southport golf base should make the start and finish of the day feel as considered as the hours beside the fairways.
