Choose the neighbourhood from the transport you will actually use to East Lothian or St Andrews.
One city, three different golf journeys
Edinburgh can make a rewarding base when the holiday includes both city time and golf. The Scottish Open at the Renaissance Club, a permitted visit to Muirfield and a day in St Andrews involve different routes and access conditions. Our recommendation is to choose a few worthwhile course days, with breathing room between them, rather than treating all three destinations as interchangeable short excursions. Start with the Scottish Open hub and the Open guide to match tickets and venues to the correct year.
The neighbourhood matters. A room near Waverley may suit a rail-led plan, while Haymarket can be useful for services that call there; neither removes the final journey from a station to a course. West End and New Town addresses vary in their walk to transport. Choose an actual property after mapping its departure point, evening food options and route back when everyone is tired.
Old Town and Waverley: investigate the level changes
An Old Town stay may appeal if you want Edinburgh's historic centre around your free time. For a rail-based golf day, measure the route to the appropriate entrance at Waverley rather than looking only at how close the property is to the station on a flat map. Steps, slopes and luggage can change the usefulness of a seemingly central address. Ask about building access, lifts and late key collection before booking an upper-floor apartment.
Our preference here is a room whose access you understand and whose station walk is comfortable in both directions. A family with a buggy or a visitor using a mobility aid should request a detailed route rather than relying on the phrase city centre. For a short stay, breakfast and bags deserve attention too: can you leave before service starts, and where can luggage go after check-out? An attractive setting should still allow a calm early departure for the golf.

New Town, Haymarket and West End trade-offs
New Town accommodation can suit visitors who want city evenings with a walk or local connection to their golf departure point. Check the precise street and the route to Waverley or your bus stop. Do not assume that every New Town property sits a few easy minutes from the relevant platform. For a group, compare the cost of a bigger apartment with the time everyone will spend reaching the station.
Haymarket and West End searches are worth considering when the property's transport position fits your itinerary. Check whether your chosen train actually calls at Haymarket and whether you need to travel east across the city first. A West End room can be convenient for some arrivals without being the quickest starting point for every golf day. Our suggestion is to write the departure station beside each planned outing, then choose the property that works for the majority. If there is no clear winner, consider fewer transfers rather than a supposedly perfect central base.
The Scottish Open: wait for the right edition’s transfer
The Renaissance Club is in East Lothian, so an Edinburgh room needs an onward course transfer. The DP World Tour's Edinburgh travel article describes its 2023 arrangement: a train to Longniddry and a free event shuttle. That is a useful example of how a championship journey can work, but it is explicitly previous-year guidance. Use the current event's published travel page before committing to a station, shuttle pickup or expected last departure.
ScotRail's planner lets you test the scheduled rail part when the relevant timetable is available. Keep the room-to-station walk and the event-gate approach in the day plan. If driving, use the organiser's authorised parking instructions rather than the everyday club address. For multiple attendance days, compare the cumulative commute with our North Berwick stay guide. Edinburgh is most attractive when the city is part of the reason for travelling, rather than merely somewhere to sleep between repeated early starts.
Muirfield: Gullane access and a real visit arrangement
Muirfield is in Gullane, and the club publishes its arrival guidance and visitor conditions. East Coast Buses' current 124 information provides an Edinburgh–North Berwick corridor through Gullane, but reaching the town is only part of reaching an authorised visit. Check the relevant stop, final walk and return through the operator's planner. If your visit involves a booked playing time, leave sufficient margin and follow the club's instructions for arrival.
Importantly, Muirfield's visitor guidance says spectators cannot accompany ordinary visiting players. Do not reserve a room on the assumption that buying someone else's tee time gives you a day following them around the course. A confirmed championship would have its own public admission arrangements. Read our Muirfield guide, establish what visit is actually available and then choose transport. For a party with mixed plans, Edinburgh may still be a useful base, but the non-golfers should have an independent city day rather than an imagined walk along the fairways.
St Andrews: possible as a day trip, demanding as a daily commute
National Rail identifies Leuchars as the station for St Andrews; it is outside the town, so an Edinburgh rail journey requires an onward connection. The University of St Andrews' travel guidance also explains the rail approach through Leuchars. Use the actual timetable and a current local bus or arranged transfer, then add the walk from arrival in town to your destination. A map line from Waverley to Leuchars is not the full Old Course journey.
For a casual day in St Andrews, choose a manageable arrival and leave time to return without rushing. For an Open attendance day, the championship's own transport and entrance instructions are essential. Several consecutive tournament days may be more comfortable from a closer Fife base; compare our St Andrews accommodation guide before deciding. If the trip combines East Lothian and St Andrews, moving accommodation once can be more relaxing than repeatedly crossing back through Edinburgh, provided luggage and check-in times are planned.
Book the city stay around admission and transport
Build a small calendar first: arrival, city days, golf days and departure. Reserve admission through the relevant organiser, then compare rooms with cancellation terms appropriate to any remaining uncertainty. Edinburgh hosts visitors for many reasons, so property suitability and the full trip cost should drive the decision. There is no need to invent scarcity to justify looking early for a family layout or accessible bathroom.
Add local buses, daily rail fares, onward transfers and meals to the accommodation total. A room near a useful departure point can be better value than a larger space that requires a taxi before every train. If you bring a car but plan to use public transport, check overnight parking charges and access restrictions at the property. Confirm early breakfast or prepare supplies in advance, and record the cancellation deadline separately from the payment date. For a group, make the budget understandable before one person pays the deposit.
Space, families and accessibility in a city base
For families, Edinburgh works well when the non-golf programme is a real part of the holiday. Avoid asking children to manage a late return from St Andrews followed by an early East Lothian start. Give the party a slower morning and choose proper beds rather than squeezing every advertised sleeping place into the booking. Ask where a buggy can be stored and whether the route to breakfast involves stairs or a busy road crossing.
Access questions should cover the building and the whole journey. A lift in the property does not answer whether the street approach, station entrance, train or course transfer works for you. Check official rail assistance and station information, then contact the event about its accessible arrival arrangements. Where fatigue is the issue, count standing and transfers rather than distance alone. A slightly longer direct route may be preferable to a chain of hurried changes, particularly after a day exposed to coastal weather.
Eat in Edinburgh and keep a flexible evening
Our advice is to make Edinburgh your evening destination once the golf journey is finished. Choose a restaurant near the property on the busiest days and avoid reservations that rely on catching one exact train after the last putt. A city stay earns its place in the trip when you have time to enjoy it; leave at least one unhurried evening without another transport deadline. Ask the business directly about kitchen hours and dietary needs.
Before bed, prepare the next day's ticket, charger, waterproofs and a separate warm layer for the homeward trip. Confirm the morning departure and save the room address offline. Use the packing guide to keep the day bag light enough for several transport changes. Our verdict is that Edinburgh suits selective golf visits within a city holiday; a course-focused week deserves a serious comparison with closer coastal accommodation.
