Dundee can suit a wider city stay, while Crail and Anstruther work best when you are planning a coastal holiday and a reliable course transfer.
Choose your course days before your accommodation
The Alfred Dunhill Links Championship uses the Old Course at St Andrews, Carnoustie and Kingsbarns, with the Sunday finish at St Andrews. The organiser confirms the event's three-course agreement through 2030. That creates a different accommodation problem from a single-venue tournament: the best room depends on which courses you intend to visit and whether you follow one player or choose a different setting each day. Our suggestion: sketch that sequence before searching for beds.
You do not need to sleep near all three courses at once, and moving accommodation each evening can add work without improving the holiday. One stable base usually gives you more time to enjoy the trip. Compare the journey from each shortlisted property to each intended course, including the return and dinner. A room that is convenient for two days and manageable for one farther excursion may serve you better than a theoretical midpoint with awkward access to everywhere. Leave room for changing your spectator plan when the draw is published.
St Andrews: our suggestion for the final-day focus
St Andrews is the natural first search when you want to spend time around the Old Course and attend the Sunday finish. The course's relationship with the town can make an accommodation-and-evening plan relatively compact, but establish the actual spectator entrance rather than assuming you can join the event at any fairway. Check the room address too: accommodation marketed as St Andrews may be outside the walkable centre.
For a day at Kingsbarns, plan a separate road or published public-transport connection and its final approach. For Carnoustie, examine the journey north and back rather than assuming the three-course event supplies an inter-course shuttle. Our suggestion: use St Andrews if its evenings and Old Course access are the main reason for travelling, while accepting that the other venues require deliberate excursions. A kitchen, luggage storage and somewhere to dry clothing can be useful over several autumn days. Avoid overloading the final evening with a fixed onward connection that demands leaving before the championship concludes.

Carnoustie: concentrate on the course beside the town
Carnoustie suits visitors whose main interest is seeing that course and who want their accommodation search centred on the town. The organiser's visitor guidance identifies Carnoustie railway station as a practical arrival point near the links. Use current station information and event entrance directions to establish your own route. Our suggestion: a town stay works especially well if one day or two days of golf here matter more to you than attending every venue.
If your plan includes St Andrews or Kingsbarns, price the separate return trip before choosing the room. A railway journey towards the St Andrews area still needs the onward connection from Leuchars, and Kingsbarns needs its own final leg. A road transfer may be preferable for a group, but the quote should name the actual destination and collection arrangement. For non-golf companions, consider whether they will keep the car or need independent transport. An accommodation booking can be close to one course while leaving the rest of your chosen itinerary surprisingly complicated.
Dundee: a city base between different golf journeys
Dundee is our suggestion for visitors who would enjoy a city stay and are comfortable planning separate course journeys. It is useful to think of Carnoustie and the Fife venues as different days, each with its own route. For Carnoustie, investigate the appropriate railway service and the walk to the event. For St Andrews, National Rail identifies Leuchars as the relevant rail destination; continue from there to town and the public entrance. Kingsbarns needs another local connection.
Choose accommodation around the station or vehicle pickup you will use, with manageable access to dinner when you return. A central city label alone does not settle that. Check the evening service on each attendance day and allow time for walking out of the course. If driving, follow parking instructions for the specific venue, not directions copied from another day. Dundee can suit a mixed group well when people skipping golf want independent plans. For the spectators, assess the cumulative travel across the whole week before concluding that one cheaper room is the better deal.
Crail and Anstruther: coastal bases for a wider stay
Crail and Anstruther are our suggestions for people who want a Fife coastal holiday with tournament visits included. They are particularly worth comparing if Kingsbarns and the East Neuk appeal to your party. The room decision should still include a practical road or public-transport route to each course you want to watch. Do not assume the nearest village bus stop provides a championship connection at the hour you need.
From either base, examine the journey towards Kingsbarns or St Andrews, the designated spectator approach and the return. Carnoustie is a separate outing, so allow a comfortable travel margin rather than attempting an early start and a tightly timed evening elsewhere. A self-catering stay can help a family keep meals and bedtimes flexible. Ask about parking, stairs and access with luggage before reserving a property on a historic street. For a party sharing one vehicle, agree whether everybody attends the same venue each day or whether some people need their own transport.
A three-course itinerary that leaves time to watch
Our suggestion: choose one course per day unless you have a specific reason to move. Seeing the players, finding a viewing position and watching a sequence of holes is often more rewarding than spending the middle of the day on another transfer. Follow the published draw if a particular professional or amateur matters to you, and confirm which course that group plays. Avoid buying transport around an assumed rotation before it has been announced.
Prepare each day from your chosen accommodation separately: breakfast, departure, parking or station, entrance, return connection and an evening meal. Save the relevant route offline and tell every member of the party which venue is on the plan. If weather changes the day's golf, listen to the organiser and adjust the return safely. The course you visit last may not be the one nearest your room, so keep luggage and departure-day arrangements independent of a rigid on-course schedule. One comfortable base should help the itinerary remain flexible.
Booking for autumn golf without overcomplicating the stay
Search the exact championship nights once dates are confirmed on the event hub, with all guests included. Our suggestion: favour room terms that permit sensible changes while your course sequence and transport develop. Read the cancellation deadline, payment date and minimum stay. If reserving an entire property, confirm bed types and agree costs before one person accepts responsibility for the whole group. Availability and prices need a live search; no town should be treated as automatically cheap.
Include the night before your first early attendance if arriving from far away. Consider staying after the Sunday finish instead of tying the closing holes to a long trip home. Compare the whole stay: room, breakfast, daily transport, parking and luggage storage where required. Moving accommodation between the Fife coast and Carnoustie may look attractive on a map, but check-out times and bags can create a new problem. Only make that move if the benefit to your particular trip clearly outweighs the disruption.
Family comfort, access and evenings
Autumn golf can leave everyone wanting a warm, uncomplicated evening. Ask the accommodation provider about heating, drying space and early breakfast, especially for a rental whose facilities are described only briefly. Families may prefer separate sleeping areas and a kitchen, while friends sharing should check beds rather than counting bedrooms alone. Arrange room keys so anyone leaving the course early can return without waiting for the whole group.
Accessible accommodation should be assessed against the actual course days as well as the room. Obtain details about the property's entrance and bathroom, then check station, vehicle and event access for each venue. Three courses can mean three different approaches, even within the same championship. Speak to the organiser about the assistance your party needs and save the relevant contacts. Continue with the Dunhill Links hub, Kingsbarns venue guide and Carnoustie venue guide before fixing your stay. Our spectator guides help complete the daily plan.

Travelling between the Dunhill courses
For the Old Course, take ScotRail to Leuchars and a Stagecoach bus to St Andrews. Kingsbarns is on the local bus corridor between St Andrews and Crail; plan the stop and onward walk separately. Carnoustie has its own railway station, about ten minutes’ walk from the course. These are ordinary public-transport routes; The Open’s July shuttle is a separate event service.
