Start with the slope above the lake
Confirmed: the Evian Resort Golf Club's Champions Course is an eighteen-hole course at Évian-les-Bains in France. The resort identifies it as the home of the Evian Championship and also offers the separate six-hole Lake Course. The championship landscape is above the lakeside town, so a room near the waterfront still needs a plan for reaching the golf. A lake view and a course-side position are different advantages.
Our suggestion: search Évian first if the championship is the main purpose of the holiday. It keeps the stay centred on the same side of the lake as the venue and avoids making a border crossing part of every course day. Lausanne can be a memorable alternative, but it requires a ferry timetable that fits the golf. Geneva is particularly worth considering for arrival or departure nights and for a wider city break.
When booking, distinguish a spectator ticket from a resort stay and a visitor tee time. A hotel reservation does not itself give championship admission, and a golf package may relate to a different course or date. Match the product names and actual dates on each confirmation. For the 2027 event, use the dedicated Evian Championship guide alongside the current organiser's ticket information.
Around the venue

The Champions Course in person
Confirmed: the resort publishes a course description and scorecard for the Champions Course and describes its availability to amateur visitors who meet its playing requirements. The setting combines a cultivated golf landscape with views towards Lake Geneva and the mountains. It is a very different trip from following golf across a British links: elevation, travel between the town and course, and summer conditions all need attention.
Our suggestion: use the official hole information to understand the closing stretch before arriving. The resort's course presentation includes the sixteenth and the finish, areas that help explain the championship's television identity. At an event, pick a permitted viewing position where you can see a shot land and the next decision unfold. A picturesque backdrop is a bonus; a useful angle on play is what makes a viewing spot rewarding.
Slopes can be more demanding to walk than they appear on a screen. Our suggestion is to alternate movement with periods watching several groups from one location. Give children and less mobile companions a day shaped around their energy rather than the ambition of the keenest golfer. A course map helps with orientation, while the championship's spectator map shows the actual paths, facilities and accessible viewing arrangements.
For a first visit, watch how players deal with changes in level. An approach may look shorter or longer than it measures, and a sloping stance alters how a golfer can strike the ball. You do not need to understand every club choice. Comparing several attempts at the same target is an enjoyable way to see the problem develop.
Women’s golf history and visitor play
Confirmed: the club's official history identifies champions including Annika Sörenstam, Lydia Ko and Céline Boutier. The event's long connection with the resort gives the venue a distinct identity in women's professional golf. The resort's own course material is the right starting point for a playing visit, including its current handicap and booking requirements. Those conditions should be read for the date and course you intend to reserve.
Our suggestion: if you want to play and spectate on the same holiday, allow separate dates and ask the club about championship-related closures. A tournament course requires preparation and reinstatement, so availability around the event can differ from an ordinary week. Do not assume an advertised visitor season means an open tee sheet on the morning you want.
The six-hole Lake Course is a separate option offered by the resort. Ask which experience fits your ability and available time rather than buying only on the venue name. A group containing beginners and experienced players may need different arrangements to have an enjoyable day. Confirm rental equipment, practice facilities and arrival expectations through the official reservation channel before travelling with or without clubs.
Geneva, rail through France and the Lausanne ferry
Confirmed: CGN operates the N1 connection between Lausanne and Évian, with current timetables available on its official website. This establishes a practical cross-lake option, but your golf-day plan must include the journey to the departure landing, the crossing and the onward transfer uphill from Évian. Check the last return as carefully as the first sailing. A long final round can change when you leave the course.
Our suggestion: Lausanne works best when the ferry is part of the holiday you actively want. It gives a striking arrival across the lake and a Swiss base for other days. Price every crossing for the party and compare that with staying in France. A room rate on one shore cannot be compared fairly with another until the repeated transport cost and time are included.
For a flight into Geneva, compare a road transfer with the available public transport journey for your landing time. The airport and Évian sit in different countries, which matters if hiring a car or using mobile data. Check the rental agreement for cross-border use and return location. A late landing may make an airport-area overnight more comfortable than a complicated same-night journey to the lake's French shore.
For travel from Britain by rail, use SNCF's official planner for the French part and consider the transfer between Paris stations. Carrying golf clubs or travelling with children can make a generous connection worthwhile. Look at the total trip and luggage rules of each operator, not just a headline London-to-Paris duration. If the final arrival is late, confirm how you will check into the accommodation.
Drivers should ask the event organiser about authorised parking and access on championship days. Ordinary resort directions do not establish a spectator parking entitlement. If staying without a car, identify the final transfer from town before selecting the room. An uphill journey at the start of a hot day deserves more planning than a casual distance measurement on a booking map.
Four bases, four versions of the holiday
Our suggestion: Évian-les-Bains is the natural base when you want several days at the championship. Compare lakefront convenience with the actual route to the golf rather than assuming one address is best for everything. Ask about early breakfast, the distance to a suitable pickup point and any parking arrangement. A room in the town can also let non-golfing companions enjoy their own day while spectators head uphill.
Thonon-les-Bains provides another French-side search. It can suit a broader lakeside holiday, but the daily transfer to the venue needs costing and timing. Check whether you will drive, use public transport or arrange a transfer. Our suggestion is to compare the full return journey after dinner, not simply the morning connection. A self-catering property may help a family manage food and laundry over a longer stay.
Lausanne is the ferry-led option. Choose accommodation with the journey to the CGN landing in mind, as the city's topography and station location make a broad distance comparison incomplete. If your event day starts early, examine whether the first useful sailing gives enough margin. For a mixed itinerary, Lausanne can add variety, provided nobody feels that crossing the lake has become an unwelcome daily commute.
Geneva is strongest when the city and airport convenience add real value. It is less obvious as the default base for repeated long days at the course. Our suggestion is to compare it for an arrival night, a departure night or a shorter golf visit within a city break. Look at the surface journey you will actually take rather than assuming the lake's familiar name means everything is close together.
Remember that France and Switzerland use different currencies. Compare totals in a consistent currency and consider card charges, local transport and any accommodation taxes shown in the booking terms. For a group, agree whether daily ferry or transfer costs come from a shared budget. The room price is only one part of an Evian trip.
Summer spectating and lakeside evenings
Our suggestion: keep the first course day flexible. Learn the paths, find water and food points, and choose an afternoon viewing position before the busiest part of the day. Sun protection matters when you are outside for hours, and a light waterproof remains useful if conditions change. Carry a refillable bottle only in line with the event's current rules, and check the bag policy before leaving your room.
For food after golf, a reservation in your own base avoids another transport problem when the group is tired. Use official restaurant menus for dietary requirements and opening days. If staying in France and returning to Switzerland, make the ferry connection the fixed point around which dinner is planned. A pleasant lakeside meal can become stressful if everyone spends it watching the time.
Accessibility questions should mention the slopes explicitly. Ask the championship organiser about the route from parking or shuttle arrival to viewing areas, suitable toilets, rest points and companion arrangements. At the hotel, confirm steps, lifts and the practical bathroom layout. A property with an accessible room still needs a workable link to the championship transport.
For a playing visit, obtain the current club conditions directly. Ask about handicap evidence, club hire, trolley or buggy availability and what happens in poor weather. Do not substitute a spectator's experience of a course path for advice about playing eighteen holes. The club can explain how its facilities match the needs of the actual golfers in your party.
Our suggestion: leave room for the lake itself. A quiet town walk, an unhurried breakfast or a non-golf day can make the holiday feel complete. Arrange the final return journey with enough time for luggage and any border crossing. Evian is at its best when the championship and lakeside setting support each other, rather than competing for every minute of the itinerary.
History
Golf at Évian predates the championship that now makes its name familiar around the world. France's national tourism organisation dates the course to 1904 and its expansion to eighteen holes to 1922. Those origins belong to the resort's golfing story; they should not be confused with the much later founding of the Evian Masters or the tournament's elevation to major status.
A substantial redesign came between 1988 and 1990 under Cabell B. Robinson. The championship's own account identifies that work as a significant step in developing a course capable of hosting elite competition. Its hillside location above Lake Geneva gives the venue a very different setting from the British and Irish links that dominate many golf-travel itineraries. Visiting both kinds of course is a way to understand how championship golf developed across contrasting landscapes.
The Evian Masters began in 1994. Its growth gave women's golf a regular showcase in this part of France, and in 2013 the event became the LPGA's fifth major. The LPGA's contemporary preview and field-criteria announcement make the change in status explicit. Earlier champions remain Evian Masters champions; their victories should not retrospectively be described as major titles.
Course renovation accompanied that transition. The LPGA's course information records extensive work completed in 2013, and its reporting from the inaugural major described competitors encountering a redesigned course. That matters when following scoring records through time: the same venue name does not guarantee identical holes, routing or championship conditions. Always attach the year and competition to a notable score.
The major era has supplied its own landmarks. The LPGA's tenth-anniversary review records In Gee Chun's rounds of 63, 66, 65 and 69 in 2016, producing twenty-one under par. That is a particular championship achievement, not a generic difficulty rating for the course. When you arrive, use the event's history to give context to the slopes and greens in front of you, while keeping the present spectator guide for current access arrangements. Évian rewards that combination: a resort with an older golfing foundation, a tournament created in the 1990 s, and a major championship whose identity began in 2013.
