Edinburgh has a published tram-to-rail route for The Open; Glasgow, Aberdeen and Dundee can also fit a wider trip when their actual flights and connections suit.
Start with the whole arrival journey
Compare the time from landing to your accommodation, rather than the air fare alone. Add border procedures, baggage collection, the airport transfer and the final connection into St Andrews. A cheaper flight that needs an extra hotel night may still be good value, but put that night into the comparison before booking. Leave a comfortable margin before your first ticketed golf day.
If arriving after a long overnight flight, make the first day straightforward. An airport or city overnight can give you time to sleep and sort your luggage before travelling to Fife. Arrange accommodation check-in and ask what happens if the flight is delayed. Do not rely on finding an available room near St Andrews after a missed connection in championship week.
Set up a shared arrival note containing flight details, accommodation address, booking contact and the planned onward route. Keep a copy offline so it works before mobile data is connected. For a group arriving on different flights, agree whether you will meet in the airport, a city or at the accommodation; waiting for several arrivals can remove the apparent advantage of a shorter route.
Edinburgh: tram to Haymarket, then rail
The R&A's 2027 travel page gives an Edinburgh Airport route: take the tram to Haymarket, join a train towards Dundee or Aberdeen, and leave at Leuchars for the championship shuttle. That provides a useful transport framework. Check Edinburgh Airport's tram information and the ScotRail journey planner for the actual date and connection.
Allow time at Haymarket to find the platform with your luggage. Buy the correct tickets for each part of the journey and check any restrictions on a cheaper rail fare before selecting it. A flight arrival is harder to predict than the start of a normal day trip, so the flexibility of the onward ticket may matter more than a small saving.
If stopping in Edinburgh, choose the room around the onward station and your sightseeing plans. Our Edinburgh guide explains the trade-offs of remaining there for golf days. If continuing straight to St Andrews, ask your host about late arrival and avoid carrying more bags than you can comfortably manage through changes and the final walk.

Glasgow: allow for the city transfer
For Glasgow Airport, the championship organiser describes Airport Express service 500 into Glasgow, a walk towards Queen Street station, rail to Haymarket and an onward train to Leuchars. Use the airport's bus page alongside ScotRail for the current journey. The number of changes deserves attention when travelling with children, large luggage or mobility equipment.
A Glasgow overnight can make sense when you want city time or your flight arrives late. Choose it deliberately and start for Fife rested the following morning. Compare that with continuing immediately: the better option depends on the actual flight and the connections still running when you leave the terminal. An ordinary daytime journey example does not establish a safe late-evening connection.
If booking a transfer vehicle, request a written quote for the whole party and luggage. Confirm collection instructions, flight-delay handling and the destination address. During the championship, ask the driver how the final approach follows the event restrictions. A direct vehicle avoids changes but still shares the roads with event traffic and needs an agreed drop-off point.
Aberdeen and Dundee: match the airport to the wider trip
Aberdeen can suit visitors including north-east Scotland in their holiday. The airport's official transport pages describe its city connections, including the 727 bus. Plan the onward rail journey separately and use the timetable for your travel date. Compare the whole route with an arrival through Edinburgh before deciding that a particular flight is the better choice.
Dundee Airport is listed by The R&A among airports serving the St Andrews area. Check the airport operator's current flight information and the airline's bookable schedule for July 2027. A nearby airport is useful only if the route and travel day fit your journey. Arrange the transfer to your chosen Dundee or Fife accommodation in advance, especially for an arrival outside usual daytime travel.
Neither airport choice gives a championship entry ticket. Keep flight, hotel and golf bookings in separate lines in your plan, with the precise dates visible. If a package combines any of them, read what is included and what you must still arrange. This makes it easier to compare alternatives without accidentally counting the same element twice.
UK entry permission: use GOV.UK for each traveller
Check the official UK visa and ETA checker using the nationality and circumstances of each person travelling. Requirements depend on those details; do not copy a travelling companion's result automatically. GOV.UK says many visitors need an electronic travel authorisation or a visa, with exceptions including British and Irish passport holders and some people who already have UK permission.
Where an ETA is required, use GOV.UK's ETA service. The official guidance says each eligible traveller needs their own authorisation, including babies and children. It also warns that an ETA does not guarantee entry. Apply with enough time to resolve questions before flying and check the current guidance again if your passport or travel circumstances change.
Avoid commercial sites imitating government application services. Read the official instructions for the passport you will use, save the result or confirmation as advised and check that the airline booking details match. If your wider trip includes Ireland, check that country's entry requirements separately: permission for one destination should not be assumed to cover a different jurisdiction.
Money, meals, mobile data and Scottish weather
Budget in pounds sterling for the Scottish part of the trip. Before leaving, ask your bank about overseas card charges and cash withdrawals; compare those terms rather than accepting an unfamiliar conversion choice hurriedly at payment. Keep a backup payment method separate from your main wallet. At restaurants, look at the bill for any included service charge before deciding on an additional tip.
Arrange mobile data before the day you need your digital golf ticket. Check roaming with your provider or the compatibility of an alternative plan, and save useful addresses and journey details offline. Bring the appropriate charging plug for your devices and a way to recharge the phone during a long day. Do not make one traveller's phone the only place holding every essential booking.
Pack layers and waterproofs even for July. Wind, rain and sunshine can all affect a day standing beside an exposed links course, and a comfortable city outfit may not be enough. Read what to pack for the golf before closing the suitcase. Finish the plan by comparing St Andrews and Dundee stays, then use the Open hub for your ticketed dates and the town activities guide for a gentle first day.
Make the first morning easy
For an overseas arrival, the first morning in Scotland is worth planning as carefully as the flight. Check whether breakfast is included or whether the accommodation has a kitchen, and decide how you will obtain anything needed before an early departure. Put waterproofs and comfortable footwear somewhere easy to find rather than leaving them at the bottom of a large suitcase.
Ask about bag storage if you reach the accommodation before the room is ready. If the answer is uncertain, choose a different arrival plan rather than assuming a championship venue or attraction can hold everything. Keep essential medication, documents and one change of clothing with you when flying, following the airline and security rules for what you carry.
Before travelling onwards, check for disruption through the relevant operator and send the accommodation a useful arrival update if needed. A simple first day creates room to recover from the journey and enjoy St Andrews properly. Save the ambitious sightseeing for later in the holiday, when the golf timetable and your energy level are clearer.
