Published 2027 adult practice tickets run from £40 to £70, compared with £150 to £190 for championship days; compare the full trip before choosing a more distant base.
Choose the experience before the daily spend
Decide what would make the visit worthwhile: seeing the Old Course during the championship week, watching a favourite player prepare, or following the competition itself. Those are different trips with different ticket costs. If the essential wish is to experience St Andrews and see elite golf at close range, a practice day can leave more money for a comfortable overnight stay and a second day around town.
Make the budget for the whole party, then divide it honestly. Include accommodation, admission, the journey to Scotland, local travel, food and a small reserve for changes. Count the nights needed to make your golf days enjoyable, including an arrival night where necessary. A cheaper room that requires a very early start and an expensive late return may not be a saving once everything is added.
Our opinion is to protect the parts that keep the day comfortable: a manageable journey, weatherproof clothing you already own and enough money for a proper meal. Cut optional purchases before turning the trip into a test of endurance. The general golf budget guide covers wider tactics; this page applies them to St Andrews 2027.
The confirmed ticket prices
The R&A's 2027 general-admission table lists adult practice-day tickets at £40 on Sunday 11 July, £50 on Monday 12 July, £60 on Tuesday 13 July and £70 on Wednesday 14 July. Adult championship tickets are £150 on Thursday and Friday, £170 on Saturday and £190 on Sunday. Use those published face values when comparing days, then check which authorised buying route actually has availability.
The same table shows Youth tickets for ages 16–24 at half the corresponding adult amount and Junior tickets for under-16s free, subject to the ticket conditions. Age categories use the eligibility date set out in the terms. Free junior admission still requires a valid ticket; do not turn up expecting a child to enter on an adult's ticket alone.
The main ballot has closed. Follow current options through The R&A's ticket page, including information about official packages and the resale platform planned for 2027. A face-value price table is not a promise that any day can be bought immediately. Avoid building a non-refundable travel plan around an unofficial seller's assurance.

Practice days: spend less without rushing
Practice days run from Sunday 11 to Wednesday 14 July before the championship rounds. They are useful when the trip is about watching preparation and enjoying the venue, rather than seeing a score that counts towards the Claret Jug. Read our practice-day guide for the announced highlights and differences between the days.
Choose the particular day for its value to your group. The cheapest ticket does not automatically produce the cheapest trip if the available accommodation costs more on that night. Compare a one-day outing with a two-night stay that makes arrival and departure easier. If you already live within practical reach, a single well-planned day may satisfy the wish without buying several sessions simply because you have travelled.
Do not assume that a practice-day ticket permits access on a championship day, or that a player will appear at a chosen time. Keep the plan flexible enough to watch what is happening when you arrive. A less expensive admission day is most rewarding when you enjoy its character rather than judging it against an experience you did not buy.
Compare Dundee, Edinburgh and the Fife coast properly
St Andrews offers proximity, while Dundee, Edinburgh and the East Neuk create different travel trade-offs. Search the actual nights with the correct number of guests. Compare the total payable price, cancellation deadline, bed arrangement and breakfast before deciding a particular base is cheaper. We cannot promise that a town will have lower rates for every championship date.
Dundee is worth comparing for visitors happy to make the daily connection to St Andrews. Edinburgh suits those adding a city break, though repeated trips take time and money. A coastal self-catering stay can work well for a group that wants village evenings, provided the onward transport is agreed. Read the Dundee, Edinburgh and East Neuk pages before choosing by room price alone.
A refundable reservation can be valuable while other plans are settling, but note the exact cancellation date and any prepayment. If splitting a property, agree who bears the cost when someone drops out. Use the number of committed travellers when calculating a per-person rate. A large house is not a bargain if the remaining guests cannot comfortably cover it.
Travel savings that survive the final mile
The official Open travel page publishes managed park-and-ride arrangements and encourages public transport or car sharing. Compare a shared vehicle's fuel and parking with individual rail or bus fares, including every local connection. For public transport, check the actual event date and intended return rather than using the cheapest example fare on another day.
For cars, the published parking charge is £20 on Sunday 11 and Monday 12 July and £25 from Tuesday 13 to Sunday 18 July; an advance purchase by 5pm on the previous day receives a £7 discount. Read the current official instructions before buying, and remember that overnight parking is prohibited. If everyone is travelling together, divide the whole vehicle cost fairly instead of counting only the parking saving.
Leave room for a missed connection in both time and money. A very restrictive itinerary may force an expensive taxi if you stay longer than planned or encounter disruption. Save an earlier departure as the intended return and understand the later alternatives. Transport savings should make the trip easier to afford without placing the entire evening on one fragile connection.
Food, equipment and the spending you can control
Ask your accommodation what cooking or breakfast facilities are actually provided. A simple breakfast before leaving and an easy evening meal can make spending more predictable, particularly for a group. If planning to carry food onto the course, check the current permitted-items rules first; select containers and contents that meet the published conditions instead of assuming anything carried in a small bag is allowed.
Borrow suitable waterproofs or use reliable clothing you already have before buying a new outfit for one day. Comfortable broken-in shoes are more useful than a themed purchase that hurts by lunchtime. Decide a souvenir allowance beforehand so it does not quietly use the travel reserve. Carry enough phone charge to access tickets and journey information without needing an emergency purchase.
Finish with a written ceiling for the whole break and a shortlist of two workable bases. Compare St Andrews and Dundee accommodation through the stay searches, then return to the Open hub to align the booking with your ticket dates. The aim is a trip you can enjoy comfortably and pay for confidently, with the optional extras chosen deliberately.
Use a small comparison sheet
Put two realistic trips side by side rather than searching endlessly for one exceptionally cheap room. For each, write the admission day, number of nights, room total, main transport, local connection and food allowance. Mark which costs are refundable and the date each commitment becomes firm. You can then see whether a lower headline price actually saves money across the break.
If the total is too high, change one large decision at a time. Try fewer golf days, a different arrival night or a base with simpler self-catering. Compare the result before cutting small comforts such as breakfast or reliable rain protection. You will learn much more from changing the structure than from chasing several tiny discounts that complicate the day.
Keep a reserve outside the planned daily spend. It can cover a changed connection, an extra meal after a delay or something useful you forgot to bring. An unused reserve stays yours; spending the entire allowance before arrival leaves no space for ordinary travel surprises and makes a modest inconvenience feel much larger.
